⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 8/10 THE SUMMARY Pixar returns to the mind of Riley, who is now officially a teenager. Just as she’s heading off to an elite hockey camp, "Puberty" hits the control room like a wrecking ball, bringing a fresh batch of complex emotions: Anxiety (Maya Hawke), Envy, Ennui, and Embarrassment. Joy and the original crew find themselves suppressed when Anxiety takes over, convinced that Riley needs a total personality overhaul to survive high school. It’s a colorful, fast-paced dive into the "brain fog" of adolescence that manages to make a panic attack look both terrifying and incredibly relatable. THE PROS Maya Hawke is a total standout as Anxiety; she brings a frantic, jittery energy that makes the character feel like a genuine threat without being a "villain." The animation has clearly leveled up, with subtle improvements to the textures of the emotions that make the world feel more vibrant than ever. It’s an 8/10 because the "Belief System" concept is a brilliant addition, visually showing how our experiences grow into the core of who we are. The humor is sharp and honest, especially with the introduction of Ennui (voiced by Adèle Exarchopoulos), who perfectly captures that Gallic teenage "whatever" vibe. The first part of the movie sets the stakes perfectly, making the shift from childhood simplicity to teenage chaos feel gripping and sincere. THE CONS It earns an 8/10 because the middle part can feel a bit sluggish as it retreads some of the same "Joy and Sadness on a road trip" beats from the first film. While the new emotions are great, the original cast—especially Fear and Disgust—get pushed to the background a bit too much. It misses a higher mark because the plot can feel slightly repetitive, following a very similar structure to the original where Joy has to learn, yet again, that she can't control every aspect of Riley's mind. Some of the "inner world" logic gets a bit convoluted toward the final part, requiring a lot of fast-talking exposition to explain how the memory-dumping actually works. THE VERDICT An 8/10. A worthy follow-up that proves Pixar still knows how to pull at the heartstrings while making you laugh at your own insecurities. It’s a winner for parents and kids alike, offering a sincere look at the messy transition into adulthood. While it doesn't quite reach the 10/10 "epic status" of the first film’s original concept, it’s a gripping and beautifully animated "banger" that is easily one of the best sequels in the Pixar catalog. Definitely a top-tier choice for a family movie night that actually has something real to say.
