    ⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 8/10 THE SUMMARY Zeus is having a bit of a mid-life crisis, except he’s the King of the Gods and his "crisis" involves a forehead wrinkle and a track-suit-wearing descent into paranoia. In this modern-day reimagining of Greek mythology, the gods are a dysfunctional family of billionaires living in luxury while mortals suffer their petty whims. Jeff Goldblum plays the King of Olympus who becomes convinced a prophecy is about to end his reign. Meanwhile, three humans on Earth realize they are cosmically linked and might actually be the ones to take the old gods down. It’s a colourful, twisted, and very dark comedy that treats Mount Olympus like a high-end reality show gone wrong. THE PROS The casting is a total win. Jeff Goldblum is at his peak "Goldblum-ness" here—eccentric, cruel, and hilarious as a god who treats human lives like a game of The Sims. Janet McTeer as Hera is equally brilliant, bringing a cold, calculating energy that balances Zeus's manic vibes. The show does a fantastic job of updating ancient myths; seeing Hades running a monochrome corporate Underworld or Dionysus trying to find meaning in a nightclub feels fresh and clever. It’s an 8/10 because it’s bold, visually stunning, and isn't afraid to get bloody and weird with its storytelling. THE CONS It misses a 9 because the pacing can be a bit frantic. There are so many characters and subplots across Olympus, Earth, and the Underworld that some of the human stories feel a bit rushed compared to the god-tier drama. It settles at an 8 because the tone fluctuates wildly—one minute it’s a slapstick comedy and the next it’s a harrowing tragedy, which can be a bit jarring for some viewers. It also leaves quite a few threads hanging for a second season that Netflix unfortunately cancelled in late 2024, meaning we might never see the full payoff of the prophecy. THE VERDICT A solid 8/10. It’s a sharp, stylish, and incredibly creative take on mythology that feels unlike anything else on TV. It isn't a 9 because of the uneven tone and the lack of a proper resolution, but for the performances alone, it’s a must-watch. If you want to see what happens when the gods become as messy as the humans they rule, this is the one to get on with. INSOMNIAC TRIVIA • Last-Minute Legend: Jeff Goldblum wasn't the first choice for Zeus. Hugh Grant was originally cast in the role but had to pull out due to scheduling conflicts. Goldblum stepped in and basically tailored the character to his own specific brand of chaotic energy.• Monochrome World: The scenes in the Underworld were filmed entirely in black and white to emphasize the drab, bureaucratic nature of death, contrasting sharply with the neon and gold-soaked world of Olympus.• Mythic Easter Eggs: If you look closely at the background of the "mortal" world, the brands and signs are all nods to Greek lore. From "Icarus" airline posters to "Prometheus" energy drinks, the show is packed with details for eagle-eyed mythology fans. THE VIBE Like a designer party that’s about to turn into a riot. It smells like expensive cologne and burnt offerings. It’s bright, cynical, and very chaotic. It makes you want to check your horoscope, ignore the weather, and realize that even gods are terrified of the truth.
