⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 8/10 THE SUMMARY Ed and Lorraine Warren travel to North London for one of their most famous and controversial cases: the Enfield Poltergeist. They find the Hodgson family living in a council house terrorized by a foul-mouthed spirit and a spindly, terrifying entity known as the Crooked Man. As the media accuses the family of faking the phenomena for fame, Lorraine begins to realize that the haunting is tied to a dark vision of Ed’s death she had months prior. It’s a masterful blend of "kitchen sink" British drama and high-octane supernatural horror that keeps the stakes feeling deeply personal. THE PROS Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga are the heart of the show, and the scene where Ed sings Elvis to the kids is a beautiful, sincere moment that makes you care about the characters between the scares. Madison Wolfe is a total standout as Janet Hodgson, delivering a physically demanding and genuinely creepy performance that anchors the whole movie. It’s an 8/10 because James Wan is at the top of his game here, using long, tension-filled takes—like the interview with the spirit behind Ed’s back—to create unbearable dread. The introduction of the Nun (Valak) is epic status, providing one of the most iconic and terrifying scares in modern horror history. The production design perfectly captures the grey, damp atmosphere of 1970s London, making the haunting feel honest and grounded. The CGI used for the Crooked Man is a bit of a letdown for some, as his jerky, stylized movement can feel a little too "cartoonish" compared to the gritty realism of the rest of the film. It misses a higher mark because the final part leans heavily into loud, chaotic spectacle that loses some of the quiet, psychological chill established in the first part. INSOMNIAC TRIVIA • Practical Scares: Despite looking like CGI, the Crooked Man was actually played by actor Javier Botet, who has a rare condition called Marfan syndrome that allows him to move his limbs in the spindly, unsettling way seen on screen.• Blessed Set: Because the first film had reports of "strange occurrences" on set, a priest was brought in to bless the production of the sequel on the very first day of filming to keep the bad vibes away.• Authentic Audio: The film uses snippets of the actual recordings made by Maurice Grosse during the Enfield investigation, including the rasping, deep voice that allegedly came out of the real Janet Hodgson. THE VIBE Like a rainy night in a drafty council house. It smells of damp carpet, old tea leaves, and the cold, metallic scent of a swinging crucifix.
