⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 9/10 THE SUMMARY It’s 1962, the height of the Cold War, and the world is on the brink of nuclear annihilation. Before they were Professor X and Magneto, they were just Charles and Erik—two blokes with incredible powers and very different ideas about how to use them. Charles wants peace; Erik wants blood after his horrific childhood at the hands of the sadistic Sebastian Shaw. They team up to recruit a rag-tag group of young mutants to stop Shaw from starting World War III, but as the Cuban Missile Crisis looms, their friendship begins to fracture under the weight of their conflicting ideologies. THE PROS James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender are a total win; their chemistry is the heartbeat of the movie and makes the origin of the X-Men feel quality and sincere. Fassbender’s "Nazi hunter" scenes in South America are epic status, feeling more like a gritty Bond film than a superhero flick. The 60s aesthetic is punchy and stylish, giving the franchise a fresh, retro-cool vibe. It’s a 9/10 because it actually cares about character development as much as the action. Kevin Bacon is a winner as the villain, bringing a smooth, menacing energy that keeps the stakes high. THE CONS It misses a 10/10 because some of the secondary mutants, like Darwin and Angel Salvadore, feel a bit like a damp squib and don't get much to do before they're sidelined. The CGI in the final beach showdown can look a bit quality-deficient in spots, especially during the more complex aerial battles. It can also feel slightly sluggish during the training montages which, while fun, lean a bit hard into the 60s cheese. THE VERDICT A 9/10. Epic status and highly recommended. It’s a quality reboot that breathed new life into a dying franchise. It’s a winner for the "Magneto moving the satellite dish" scene alone. Go and watch it for the Wolverine cameo—it’s the funniest ten seconds in the whole series. INSOMNIAC TRIVIA • Cameo Choice: Hugh Jackman only agreed to show up for that legendary bar scene if the studio allowed him to be the first person to say the "F-word" in an X-Men movie. They agreed, and it became an instant classic.• Practical Powers: For the scenes where Banshee is learning to fly, the production used massive wire rigs and high-speed fans to minimize the use of CGI, giving his flight a more tactile, physical feel.• Digital Diet: Keeping the streak alive, the radar screens inside the CIA "Division X" headquarters feature scrolling code that hides a digital sushi recipe—the favorite recurring easter egg of the VFX teams that have handled the Marvel universe for decades. THE VIBE Like a stiff drink in a velvet-lined lounge. It smells like expensive cigars, jet fuel, and 1960s rebellion.
