⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 8/10 THE SUMMARY Fede Álvarez takes the franchise back to its grimy, claustrophobic roots with *Alien: Romulus*. Set between the events of *Alien* and *Aliens*, the story follows Rain (Cailee Spaeny) and her synthetic brother Andy (David Jonsson), two young scavengers stuck on a soul-crushing mining colony. Desperate for a way out, they join a group of friends on a heist to strip a derelict space station for cryo-tubes. What they find instead is a Weyland-Yutani "Renaissance" station—split into Romulus and Remus modules—that is crawling with facehuggers and a new breed of horror. It’s a lean, mean survival thriller that ditches the philosophical fluff for pure, unadulterated terror in the dark. THE PROS This is an 8/10 because it’s an absolute winner for fans of practical effects. Álvarez uses real animatronics and physical sets, making the Xenomorph feel heavy, slimy, and terrifyingly present. The chemistry between Rain and Andy is the high-quality heart of the movie; David Jonsson gives an incredible, sincere performance as a glitchy synthetic who undergoes a personality shift that is genuinely gripping. It’s a 8/10 because the first hour is a masterclass in tension—the facehugger sequence in the flooded lab is a total standout that’ll have you holding your breath. The sound design is high-quality, capturing the screaming metal and heavy silence of space in a way that feels honest to the original 1979 vibe. THE CONS It misses out on "Epic Status" because it leans a bit too hard into fan service in the final act, with some jarring callbacks that feel like a touch of pandering. The middle part gets a bit sluggish when the plot stops for some heavy exposition involving a digitally recreated character from the original film, which looks a bit quality-deficient and ghoulish. It’s a bit of a head-scratcher why they felt the need to lean on CGI for that one specific element when the rest of the film is so brilliantly tactical. The supporting cast—aside from the leads—are a bit one-note and serve mostly as high-end fodder for the monsters, which keeps the emotional stakes from hitting that legendary 9/10 level.
