Overview

A young boy and his family set off on a sailing trip of a lifetime until a violent storm erupts, sweeping Michael and his dog overboard. After washing up on a remote island, terrified, they struggle to survive and adjust to life alone, One day, Michael discovers he is not alone when he is confronted by a mysterious Japanese man who has lived there secretly since World War II, angry that Michael has arrived. ⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 8/10 THE SUMMARY Based on the beloved Michael Morpurgo novel, this hand-drawn animated adventure is a soulful look at survival and friendship. Young Michael is washed overboard during a family sailing trip and stranded on a remote island in the Pacific. He soon realizes he isn't alone; the island is guarded by Kensuke, a former Japanese soldier who has lived in isolation since World War II. While they start as wary rivals, the two form a deep bond as they work together to protect their sanctuary from environmental threats. It’s a beautifully quiet film that ditches flashy dialogue for a more honest, visual style of storytelling. THE PROS The animation is stunning, using a hand-drawn aesthetic that feels warm, organic, and a far cry from the usual polished CGI. Cillian Murphy and Sally Hawkins provide a sincere emotional anchor as Michael’s parents, but the real star is the relationship between Michael and Kensuke, which is built on gestures and shared actions rather than talking.
