⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 8/10 THE SUMMARY Directed by Osgood Perkins, this is a dread-soaked occult thriller that feels like a modern successor to The Silence of the Lambs. Maika Monroe stars as Lee Harker, a socially awkward FBI agent with a touch of clairvoyance who is assigned to a baffling cold case. For decades, families have been murdering each other across the Pacific Northwest, seemingly triggered by a serial killer who never even enters their homes. As Harker digs deeper, she discovers a personal link to the elusive "Longlegs" (a completely unrecognizable Nicolas Cage), leading her into a nightmare of satanic dolls and repressed memories. THE PROS Maika Monroe is fantastic, giving a restrained, twitchy performance that perfectly captures the isolation of her character. Nicolas Cage is the real talking point here; he’s absolutely terrifying, using a high-pitched, warbling voice and heavy prosthetics to create a villain that feels genuinely unhinged. It’s an 8/10 because the atmosphere is oppressive—the film uses a square aspect ratio for flashbacks and wide, symmetrical shots in the present to make you feel like someone is always watching from the corner of the screen. The sound design is a winner, filled with low-frequency rumbles and whispers that keep you on edge even when nothing is happening. It’s a gripping watch because it doesn't rely on jump scares, instead building a sincere sense of evil that lingers long after the credits roll. THE CONS It earns an 8/10 because the middle part can feel a bit sluggish as the investigation hits a few dead ends, and the pacing slows down to a crawl.
