Overview

After losing Captain Jack Sparrow to the locker of Davy Jones, Will Turner, Elizabeth Swann, and Captain Barbossa journey to the ends of the earth to rescue him. And as the East India Trading Company tightens its grip on the seas under Lord Cutler Beckett—now in control of Davy Jones—the fate of piracy hangs by a thread. Now, they must unite the pirate lords for one final stand. But as loyalties are tested and alliances shift, each must ultimately choose where they stand in the battle for freedom on the high seas.

⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 8/10 THE SUMMARY The Golden Age of Piracy is gasping its last breath as Lord Cutler Beckett and the East India Trading Company use the heart of Davy Jones to hunt down every pirate ship on the sea. Will Turner, Elizabeth Swann, and a resurrected Captain Barbossa must travel to the literal edge of the world—Singapore—to secure a map from the pirate lord Sao Feng. Their mission: rescue Jack Sparrow from the hallucinogenic limbo of Davy Jones’ Locker and convene the Brethren Court. It’s an epic conclusion where alliances shift like the tide, culminate in a massive battle inside a swirling maelstrom that will decide the fate of pirate freedom forever. THE PROS Gore Verbinski goes for broke here, delivering a film that is epic status in every sense of the word. The final battle in the Calypso-induced maelstrom is pure quality—a technical masterpiece of practical effects and CGI that still puts modern 2026 blockbusters to shame. Geoffrey Rush is a winner, chewing every bit of scenery as Barbossa and providing a sincere, grizzled weight that was missed in the second film. It’s an 8/10 because Hans Zimmer’s score is a genuine belter, introducing the "One Day" theme which gives the central romance a punchy, emotional payoff. The "Locker" sequence with the multiple Jacks is quality-produced weirdness that shows a level of creative risk-taking you rarely see in Disney flicks anymore. THE CONS It earns an 8/10 because the plot is notoriously convoluted, feeling a bit like a damp squib at times as it tries to juggle the motivations of ten different main characters. With a runtime of nearly three hours, the pacing can feel slightly sluggish in the middle act during the extended political debates at the Brethren Court. It misses a 9/10 mark because some of the logic—especially the Calypso subplot—feels a bit quality-deficient and rushed, leaving more questions than answers. The tone also shifts quite jarringly from the "child-friendly" jokes of the first film to some surprisingly dark moments, like the opening hanging sequence, which might feel a bit intense for the younger crowd. INSOMNIAC TRIVIA • Keith Richards Cameo: Johnny Depp famously based Jack Sparrow's mannerisms on the Rolling Stones guitarist, so having him show up as Captain Teague, Jack's father, was a sincere tribute. Richards reportedly had to be propped up by the director during filming because he was "feeling the pirate vibe" a bit too much. • Set Destruction: As we saw in the 'Wedlocked' short, many of the Singapore and Shipwreck City sets were being demolished as the film was being shot. The production was so massive that they were literally "building and breaking" as they went, which added a punchy, frantic energy to the shoot. • Map to Nowhere: The intricate navigational chart used by Sao Feng wasn't just a random prop; it was designed with rotating rings and authentic-looking Chinese calligraphy. The "Up is Down" clue on the map was a quality bit of foreshadowing for the film’s most famous visual gag. THE VIBE Like a thunderstorm in the middle of a whirlpool.
