Overview

Thrust into an all-new adventure, a down-on-his-luck Capt. Jack Sparrow feels the winds of ill-fortune blowing even more strongly when deadly ghost sailors led by his old nemesis, the evil Capt. Salazar, escape from the Devil's Triangle. ⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 6/10 THE SUMMARY Captain Jack Sparrow is at rock bottom, sailing a ship that literally falls apart and trading his magic compass for a bottle of rum. This "betrayal" of the compass unleashes his oldest nemesis: Captain Armando Salazar (Javier Bardem), a terrifying Spanish ghost hunter who has escaped the Devil's Triangle with a phantom crew and a grudge against every pirate alive. Jack’s only hope is the Trident of Poseidon, an artifact that can break every curse on the sea. To find it, he teams up with Henry Turner (son of Will and Elizabeth) and Carina Smyth, a brilliant astronomer accused of witchcraft because she knows how to read a map. It’s a race against time as the ghosts close in and the legacy of the Turner family hangs in the balance. THE PROS Javier Bardem is a total winner in this; his portrayal of Salazar is epic status, with his floating hair and "leaking" black ink making him one of the most visually punchy villains in the series. The opening bank heist in St. Martin is pure quality—a ridiculous, high-energy sequence that proves the franchise can still do "F.U. physics" with a sincere sense of fun. It’s a 6/10 because the return of the Black Pearl to its full size is a genuine belter of a moment for long-time fans. Geoffrey Rush is quality as always, bringing a surprising amount of heart to Barbossa in a final act that actually delivers a sincere emotional payoff. The visual effects for the ghost sharks and the parting of the sea are absolute business. THE CONS It earns a 6/10 because Jack Sparrow himself feels like a bit of a damp squib here—he’s lost much of his "cunning genius" and spent most of the movie as a bumbling punchline, which can be a bit quality-deficient for those who loved the original trilogy. The new leads, Henry and Carina, are quality actors, but their romance feels like a slightly sluggish "copy-paste" of Will and Elizabeth without the same punchy chemistry. It misses a 7/10 mark because the plot plays fast and loose with the series’ lore—especially the origin of the compass—which will be a head-scratcher for anyone paying close attention to continuity. INSOMNIAC TRIVIA • Uncle Jack: After Keith Richards couldn't return due to scheduling, Paul McCartney stepped in for a quality cameo as Jack’s Uncle Jack. He even sings a quick sea shanty, which was a sincere "bucket list" moment for the directors who are massive Beatles fans.• Ghost Hair: To make Salazar’s hair look like it was constantly floating underwater, the VFX team had to develop a punchy new software. Javier Bardem actually filmed his scenes with his hair pulled back and a prosthetic head-piece, with every single strand of "ghost hair" added in post-production to keep it looking sincere and eerie.• Young Jack: The "Young Jack Sparrow" seen in the flashbacks wasn't entirely CGI. They used a real actor (Anthony De La Torre) who looked like a young Johnny Depp and then used "digital skin-grafting" to map Depp’s 1980s face onto him, making the transition look pure quality. THE VIBE Like an old pirate ship with a fresh coat of paint. It smells like rum, damp wood, and the cold breath of a ghost.
