⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 8/10 THE SUMMARY Shaun is living a quiet life as a valet in San Francisco, hiding from a past that involves being trained as a lethal assassin by his immortal father, Wenwu. When the Ten Rings organization comes knocking to steal a pendant left by his late mother, Shaun—aka Shang-Chi—is forced back into the fold. He teams up with his sister and his hilarious best mate Katy to find a hidden mystical village called Ta Lo before his father accidentally unleashes a soul-eating ancient evil while trying to "rescue" his dead wife. THE PROS The fight choreography is epic status; the bus fight and the scaffolding scrap in Macau are some of the most punchy and creative action scenes in the entire MCU. Tony Leung is a total win as Wenwu, bringing a quality, tragic depth to the villain role that makes him one of the best antagonists in years. It’s an 8/10 because it blends classic Wuxia martial arts with modern superhero scale in a way that feels fresh and sincere. Awkwafina is a winner for the banter, providing a grounded perspective that keeps the mystical stuff from feeling too heavy. THE CONS It misses a 9/10 because the final act turns into a bit of a CGI-heavy damp squib; after all that incredible hand-to-hand combat, it ends with giant dragons and soul-sucking bats which feels a bit quality-deficient. The pacing in the middle, while they’re exploring the mystical forest, can feel slightly sluggish compared to the high-octane start. It also has a bit of the typical "origin story" formula that holds it back from being a total game-changer. THE VERDICT An 8/10. A good movie and highly recommended for the action alone. It’s a winner for the stunt work and Tony Leung’s performance. Go and watch it for the return of Trevor Slattery—it’s quality comedy. INSOMNIAC TRIVIA • True Talent: Simu Liu did as many of his own stunts as possible. He has a background in gymnastics and parkour, which allowed the director to use long, wide shots during the fights rather than hiding the actor with quick cuts and shaky cam.• Mythic Inspiration: Many of the creatures in Ta Lo, like the Morris character (a DiJiang), are ripped straight from ancient Chinese mythology and 'The Classic of Mountains and Seas'.• Digital Dining: During the underground fight club scenes in Macau, the neon-lit tournament brackets on the screens feature hidden digital code that contains a sushi recipe—keeping the legendary VFX easter egg alive for a new generation. THE VIBE Like a neon-lit night in a bustling city followed by a mountain retreat. It smells like charred street food, incense, and gunpowder.
