⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 8/10 THE SUMMARY When a massive, unexplained storm front begins tearing across the globe, a group of strangers find themselves seeking refuge in a high-tech, reinforced bunker owned by a tech billionaire with a hidden agenda. As the world above is slowly scoured clean by the elements, the survivors—led by a resourceful paramedic (Zazie Beetz) and a skeptical structural engineer (John Boyega)—must navigate the claustrophobic tensions of their new home. It soon becomes clear that the "Shelter" wasn't just built to save them from the storm; it was designed as a social experiment to see how far humans will go to survive when resources are finite and the airlock is the only thing standing between them and certain death. THE PROS John Boyega and Zazie Beetz are a winner in this, bringing a sincere, grounded energy to a high-concept premise that could have easily felt like a damp squib. The production design of the bunker is epic status—it’s sleek, cold, and incredibly claustrophobic, making you feel the weight of the earth above the characters. It’s an 8/10 because the tension is punchy and relentless, focusing on the psychological breakdown of the group rather than just the weather outside. The sound design is pure quality, using the low rumble of the storm and the hum of the ventilation to keep the audience on edge. It’s a winner because it asks some proper tough questions about morality and survival without being a lecture. THE CONS It earns an 8/10 because the middle act can feel slightly sluggish as the group settles into their "new normal" and the political infighting starts. While the tech billionaire villain is quality, his motivations are a bit of a head—well, they’re a bit cliché and lean into tropes we've seen in other dystopian flicks. It misses a 9/10 mark because the ending is a bit of a cliffhanger that leaves several big questions unanswered, which might feel like a bit of a quality-deficient resolution for some. A good movie and highly recommended for anyone who loves a "bottle" thriller with high stakes. It’s a winner for its performances and its thick, atmospheric tension. INSOMNIAC TRIVIA • Practical Pressure: To make the "claustrophobia" feel sincere, the director had the cast stay inside the bunker set for 12 hours a day without any windows or natural light. John Boyega reportedly said it made the "cabin fever" in the script much easier to act.• Weather Effects: While the storm outside is mostly CGI, the sound of the wind was created by recording real hurricanes and then slowing them down to create a "predatory" low-frequency hum that vibrates in the cinema seats.• Casting Shuffle: The role of the billionaire was originally offered to a much older actor, but the production decided to go with a younger "tech-bro" archetype to make the social experiment aspect feel more modern and punchy.
