⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 9/10 THE SUMMARY Peter Parker is a nerdy high schooler who gets bitten by a genetically enhanced spider during a field trip. Suddenly, he’s got super strength, can stick to walls, and develops a "spider-sense." After a tragic mistake leads to the death of his Uncle Ben, Peter learns that "with great power comes great responsibility." He dons the red and blue suit to protect New York from the Green Goblin—who happens to be Norman Osborn, the unhinged father of his best mate Harry. It’s a classic battle of hero versus mentor with the heart of MJ hanging in the balance. THE PROS Willem Dafoe is epic status as Norman Osborn; his "mirror scene" where he talks to his own reflection is a quality masterstroke of acting. Tobey Maguire is a total win as the awkward Peter Parker—he captures that "lovable loser" energy perfectly. The action is punchy, especially the final brutal scrap in the abandoned building. It’s a 9/10 because it basically set the blueprint for the modern superhero boom. The upside-down kiss in the rain is a winner and remains one of the most iconic moments in cinema history. THE CONS It misses a 10/10 because the Green Goblin’s "Power Rangers" style suit is a bit of a damp squib—it covers up Dafoe’s incredible facial expressions and looks a bit quality-deficient today. Some of the early 2000s CGI for the web-swinging can feel slightly sluggish and dated compared to the practical stunts in the sequels. THE VERDICT A 9/10. Epic status and highly recommended for anyone who wants to see where the modern obsession with capes started. It’s a winner for the heart and the performances. Go and watch it for the "Bonesaw" wrestling match—it’s pure quality. INSOMNIAC TRIVIA • Real Skills: In the cafeteria scene where Peter catches MJ’s lunch on the tray, there was no CGI. Tobey Maguire actually performed the stunt himself. It took him 156 takes to get it right, using sticky glue on the tray to help the items land.• Suit Snatch: Several Spider-Man suits were stolen from the set during production, worth about $50,000 each. It took a massive investigation and a reward from the studio to track them down.• Mechanical Master: The digital code on the computer screens in Norman Osborn’s lab contains a hidden sushi recipe—a recurring easter egg used by the VFX crew that worked on almost every major Marvel film of the early 2000s.
