Robert De Niro is Travis Bickle, a war veteran and insomniac who takes a job driving a cab through the decaying, gritty streets of New York City. As he watches the "filth" of the city from behind his windshield, his social isolation turns into a violent, messianic delusion. He becomes obsessed with "cleansing" the streets, leading him on a collision course with a campaign office and a young girl (Jodie Foster) trapped in a brutal life. It is a legendary study of urban alienation that remains as sharp and honest today as it was decades ago.
