Overview

⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 6/10 THE SUMMARY Terminator Genisys is what happens when you take a classic timeline and decide to tie it into a pretzel. We start with the familiar 1984 setup, but when Kyle Reese arrives to save Sarah Connor, he finds she is already a battle-hardened warrior raised by a "tame" T-800 she calls Pops. The film tries to rewrite the entire history of the franchise, introducing a new type of nanotech threat and jumping forward to 2017 to stop "Genisys"—a global operating system—from becoming Skynet. It is a loud, ambitious, and slightly dizzying attempt to reboot the series by playing with our nostalgia. THE PROS Arnold Schwarzenegger is the absolute business here; his portrayal of an ageing, slightly glitchy Terminator who has spent decades learning to be "human" is sincere and provides the film's only real heart. The early scenes that recreate the 1984 setting are a absolute win for fans, offering a "what if" scenario that is visually impressive. The action set-pieces, like the school bus flip on the Golden Gate Bridge, are a total belter and deliver the high-octane spectacle you expect from a summer blockbuster. It is a celebratory explosion of CGI that at least tries to do something different with the weary "chosen one" trope. THE CONS It earns a 6/10 because the plot is a total head-scratcher. The timeline jumps and alternate realities become so convoluted that you practically need a whiteboard and a degree in quantum physics to keep track of who knows what. Jai Courtney as Kyle Reese feels a bit wet and lacks the desperate, wiry energy that Michael Biehn brought to the original. The "big twist" regarding John Connor was famously spoiled in the trailers, which robbed the film of its biggest emotional punch. It misses the mark because it feels more like a generic sci-fi flick than a gritty Terminator horror-thriller. THE VERDICT A 6/10. Not bad if you just want to see Arnie punching things and things blowing up, but it is a bit of a Stay Clear for those who want the logical consistency of the first two films. It is a decent enough watch for a bored Tuesday night, but it is certainly not "epic" status. Go and watch it for the nostalgia trips in the first act, but keep your expectations at "decent popcorn flick" levels. INSOMNIAC TRIVIA • Digital Double: To create the "young" 1984 Arnold, the production used a bodybuilder named Brett Azar as a double and then spent a year digitally mapping Schwarzenegger’s younger face over his, creating one of the most seamless de-ageing effects at the time.• Injury Time: Emilia Clarke actually suffered a stress fracture in her hip while filming, but she pushed through the intense action scenes and weapons training without letting the crew know how much pain she was in until later.• Cameron’s Nod: Despite not being involved in the production, James Cameron initially gave the film a public "thumbs up," though he later walked that back when he returned to produce Dark Fate, calling this entry a bit of a misstep. THE VIBE Like a computer screen flickering with too many open tabs, the smell of ozone and burnt circuitry, and the sound of a robotic "I'll be back" that feels a bit more like a promise than a threat. It is shiny, confusing, and very loud. It makes you want to delete your social media and maybe buy a very old, non-digital toaster.
