⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 5/10 THE SUMMARY Belinda (Brandy) is pregnant and already struggling with a mountain of stress when her husband’s estranged, ultra-religious stepmother, Solange (Kathryn Hunter), moves into their house. What starts as an awkward family favor quickly turns into a psychological turf war. Solange is more than just a difficult houseguest; she’s a manipulative force who uses her physical frailty and religious fanaticism to hijack the household. It’s a messy, claustrophobic horror-comedy that looks at the nightmare of being trapped with a relative who refuses to leave or play by the rules. THE PROS Kathryn Hunter is the reason to watch this. She is genuinely unsettling as Solange, using her voice and physical presence to create a character that is both pathetic and terrifying. The film does a decent job of capturing the grimy, unglamorous side of pregnancy and the frustration of having your home invaded. It hits a 5 because the early tension is effective, making you feel the same itch to scream that Belinda feels. The cinematography uses tight shots of the house to make the environment feel like it’s shrinking as Solange takes up more space. THE CONS The film loses its way in the second half, leaning too hard into "gross-out" humor involving bodily fluids that feels cheap rather than scary. It stays at a 5 because the script doesn't seem to know if it wants to be a serious psychological thriller or a campy horror, leaving the tone in a weird limbo. It misses a higher mark because the ending is abrupt and feels a bit unearned, failing to give a satisfying payoff to the build-up. It’s a bit of a slog to get through the repetitive arguments, and by the end, you’re mostly just glad to be out of that house. THE VERDICT 5/10. A gritty, uncomfortable, and often bizarre film that is carried by a powerhouse performance from Kathryn Hunter. It’s an honest look at family baggage, but the lack of a cohesive tone makes it a bit of a missed opportunity.
