Overview

Summoned by his dying father, Miyagi returns to his homeland of Okinawa, with Daniel, after a 40-year exile. There he must confront Yukie, the love of his youth, and Sato, his former best friend turned vengeful rival. Sato is bent on a fight to the death, even if it means the destruction of their village. Daniel finds his own love in Yukia's niece, Kumiko, and his own enemy in Sato's nephew, the vicious Chozen. Now, far away from the tournaments, cheering crowds and safety of home, Daniel will face his greatest challenge ever when the cost of honor is life itself.

⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 8/10 THE SUMMARY Picking up minutes after the first film's tournament victory, this 1986 sequel quickly shifts gears from the valley to the village. Mr. Miyagi receives word that his father is dying, prompting a trip back to his home in Okinawa, Japan. Daniel tags along, only to find that Miyagi is still haunted by a decades-old blood feud with his former best friend, Sato. While Miyagi deals with the ghosts of his past, Daniel finds himself in a lethal rivalry with Sato's ruthless nephew, Chozen. The stakes are raised from trophies to survival in a setting that values honor over points. THE PROS This film is a win because it deepens the lore of Miyagi-Do, moving past the "wax on, wax off" basics and into the culture that birthed the art. Pat Morita is a total belter once again, showing a more vulnerable, grieving side of Miyagi that is a sincere pleasure to watch. The change of scenery to the lush, storm-swept Okinawa (actually filmed in Hawaii) is a celebratory explosion of visual variety compared to the dry Reseda apartments. The "Drum Technique" is a sincere, iconic addition to the franchise, and the final fight in the castle ruins feels far more visceral and high-stakes than the All-Valley tournament ever did. THE CONS It earns an 8/10 because, while it’s a good movie, it’s a bit of a head-scratcher why Daniel's original love interest, Ali, is written out with a single line of dialogue. The romance with Kumiko is a sincere effort, but it feels a tad rushed to fit the "new girl in a new town" trope. It misses the 9/10 status because the pacing in the middle act slows down significantly for the tea ceremony and village life, which might test the patience of those wanting more roundhouse kicks. Ralph Macchio practiced the motion for weeks to ensure the timing of the breakaway props looked authentic. • Returning Foe: Yuji Okumoto, who played Chozen, would eventually return decades later in 'Cobra Kai', but during the filming of Part II, he was so dedicated to the role that he stayed in character to keep a genuine sense of tension between him and Macchio.
