Overview

In the post-apocalyptic future, reigning tyrannical supercomputers teleport a cyborg assassin known as the "Terminator" back to 1984 to kill Sarah Connor, whose unborn son is destined to lead insurgents against 21st century mechanical hegemony. ⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 10/10 THE SUMMARY Before it was a massive billion-dollar franchise, The Terminator was a lean, mean, and terrifying tech-noir horror film. A relentless cyborg assassin is sent back from 2029 to 1984 Los Angeles to kill Sarah Connor, a waitress whose unborn son will one day lead the human resistance against the machines. Her only hope is Kyle Reese, a wiry, traumatised soldier who has also travelled back in time to protect her. It is a desperate, rain-slicked chase through the dark streets of LA that feels more like a nightmare than a standard sci-fi flick. THE PROS Arnold Schwarzenegger is a total win as the T-800; his lack of emotion and mechanical movements make him genuinely chilling, a far cry from the "hero" he would later become. The chemistry between Michael Biehn and Linda Hamilton is sincere and frantic, making you actually care about their survival amidst all the gunfire. James Cameron’s direction is a masterclass in tension, using a tight budget to create an atmosphere that feels gritty and oppressive. The practical effects, particularly the stop-motion endoskeleton in the finale, provide a tactile horror that CGI simply cannot replicate. THE CONS It is a 10/10, so any gripes are minor, but some of the 1980s fashion and hair are a bit of a head-scratcher today. A few of the rear-projection shots during the car chases look a tad wet by modern standards, but the sheer momentum of the story means you’ll barely notice. It is a darker, more low-budget affair than the polished sequels, which might surprise those used to the "superhero" vibe of the later entries, but that is exactly what makes it a masterpiece. Simpson for the role of the Terminator, but James Cameron turned him down because he thought Simpson was "too nice" and wouldn't be believable as a cold-blooded killer.• Silent But Deadly: Arnold Schwarzenegger only has 17 lines in the entire movie, totalling less than 100 words; he focused entirely on his breathing and physical presence to ensure he didn't seem human.• Guerilla Filmmaking: Because the budget was so tight, the crew often filmed without permits; the final shot of Sarah Connor driving into the storm was done "guerilla style" with the director and a small crew just pulling over on a deserted road. THE VIBE Like a dark alleyway in the middle of a thunderstorm, the smell of gunpowder and hot engine oil, and the terrifying sound of metallic footsteps that never stop.
