⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 6/10 THE SUMMARY Bella Swan, a self-proclaimed "magnet for trouble," moves to the perennially rainy town of Forks, Washington, to live with her police-chief father. At school, she’s immediately drawn to the mysterious Cullen family—a group of incredibly pale, exceptionally attractive teenagers who avoid the sun and don’t eat. Her curiosity turns into an obsession when Edward Cullen saves her from a runaway van with superhuman strength. After some Google-sleuthing and a trip to La Push, Bella discovers Edward is a 108-year-old vampire who sparkles in the sunlight. Despite the "predator and prey" dynamic, they fall into a deep, moody romance that is interrupted when a trio of nomadic vampires tracks Bella’s scent, leading to a high-stakes showdown in a ballet studio. THE PROS Catherine Hardwicke brings a punchy, indie-film energy that actually gives this first installment more personality than the sequels. The blue-tinted, moody color palette is quality and perfectly captures the drizzly, Northwest atmosphere. Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart have a sincere, awkward chemistry that feels authentically teenage, even if it is a bit intense.
