⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 7/10 THE SUMMARY A prisoner on death row in the US and a vicar’s wife trapped in a cellar in a sleepy English village don't seem to have much in common, but their lives are about to collide in the most twisted way possible. Jefferson Grieff is a former criminology professor who murdered his wife and now spends his final days solving "moral" mysteries from behind bars. Meanwhile, a massive misunderstanding leads a mild-mannered vicar to make a series of increasingly horrific decisions to protect his family. It’s a high-concept thriller that explores how a "good" person can become a murderer in the space of a single afternoon. THE PROS Stanley Tucci is the main reason to watch this. He plays the death-row genius with a calm, terrifying intellect that makes every scene in his cell feel electric. David Tennant is equally strong as the vicar, capturing the frantic, sweating desperation of a man who is watching his life crumble in real-time. The show is at its best when it plays with the "moral puzzle" aspect—asking the audience what they would do in these impossible situations. It’s a 7/10 because it’s bold, dark, and has two of the best actors on the planet going head-to-head in a narrative game of chess. THE CONS It misses an 8 or 9 because the plot requires a massive leap of faith. The "misunderstanding" that triggers the vicar's downfall is so avoidable that you’ll spend half the time shouting at the screen. Steven Moffat’s writing can be a bit too clever for its own good, with characters making baffling choices just to keep the tension high. It settles at a 7 because, while the performances are top-tier, the logic often feels a bit shaky, making the whole thing feel more like a stage play than a grounded reality. THE VERDICT A solid 7/10. It’s a dark, fast-paced, and very well-acted thriller that will definitely keep you talking. It isn't an 8 because the plot relies too heavily on characters being incredibly stubborn or dim-witted at the worst possible moments. If you can ignore the logic gaps and just enjoy the masterclass in acting from Tucci and Tennant, it’s a great binge.
