Overview

⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 9/10 THE SUMMARY Kay Scarpetta (Nicole Kidman), a world-renowned forensic pathologist, returns to Virginia to reclaim her position as Chief Medical Examiner. She’s joined by her tech-savvy niece Lucy (Ariana DeBose) and her long-time investigative partner Pete Marino (Bobby Cannavale). As a series of grisly, high-tech murders begins to surface, Kay discovers that the ghosts of her past aren't just in her head—they are actively hunting her. This adaptation of Patricia Cornwell’s legendary book series is a cold, clinical, and pained look at the intersection of forensic science and deep-seated conspiracy. THE PROS This is an amazing series because it finally gives the source material the prestige treatment it deserves. It hits a 9 because Nicole Kidman is a total highlight; she plays Scarpetta with a pained, icy precision that feels entirely honest to the character from the books. Bobby Cannavale as Marino is a great series choice—he brings a rough, sincere energy that balances Kidman’s coldness perfectly. The forensic scenes are handled with a smart, realistic touch that focuses on the "quiet" horror of the lab rather than just cheap shocks. It’s a stylish, heavy-hitting thriller that manages to be both a great character study and a gripping mystery, making it a fair shout for the best crime drama of 2026. THE CONS It stays at a 9 because the sheer amount of technical forensic dialogue can occasionally feel like a bit of a slog if you aren’t a fan of the "procedural" side of things. It misses a perfect 10 because the pacing slows down quite a bit in the middle episodes as it explores Lucy’s tech subplots, which aren't always as gripping as Kay’s time in the morgue. Some of the darker plot twists involving Kay’s past might be an honest head-scratcher for viewers who haven't read the books, as the show assumes you know a bit of the history. While the production is top-tier, the relentlessly grim tone can be a heavy watch that leaves you feeling a bit pained by the time the credits roll. THE VERDICT 9/10.
