⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 8/10 THE SUMMARY Forget everything you think you know about the yellow-and-black fuzzballs in your garden. Narrated by explorer Bertie Gregory and executive produced by James Cameron (because even the bees need the Avatar treatment), this two-part Nat Geo docuseries dives into the macro-verse. It moves past basic pollination to show us "vulture bees" that eat meat and honeybees defending themselves like a disciplined riot squad. It’s a high-tech, high-stakes look at the tiny geniuses keeping the planet from collapsing. THE PROS The cinematography is legitimately mind-blowing—they used wide-angle macro lenses to make a single bee look like a Godzilla-sized protagonist in its own epic movie. You get world-first footage of behaviors like the "shimmering" defense and bees literally rubbing off hornet pheromones to hide. It’s educational without being preachy, and the pacing is surprisingly tense for something about insects. Seeing a hive function is like watching the world's most efficient, stress-inducing corporate office, but with more wings and better teamwork. THE CONS At only two episodes, it feels more like a long movie than a full series; you’ll be left wanting more of the "weird" bee species they only tease. Also, if you have any level of apiphobia (fear of bees), some of the ultra-close-up shots of their mandibles and compound eyes might feel more like a horror movie than a nature doc. It’s heavy on the "spectacle," sometimes at the expense of deeper scientific dive into the 20,000 other species they mention. THE VERDICT A visual masterpiece that proves size doesn't matter when the stakes are global. It’s the kind of show that makes you feel guilty for ever swatting at a fly. If you liked Prehistoric Planet or Our Planet, this is a "Guaranteed Banger" for your next midnight nature binge. INSOMNIAC TRIVIA To get the footage inside the hive, the crew spent three years developing a "studio" hive where the bees accepted the cameras as part of the architecture. Also, the executive producer is James Cameron—he brought over some of the same 3D and macro-filming tech used to develop the world of Pandora for Avatar. THE VIBE Like shrinking down to three inches tall and realizing that your backyard is actually a high-tech war zone and a masterclass in engineering all at once.
