    ⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 7/10 THE SUMMARY If you ever wondered what the galaxy’s angriest red-and-black ballerina was doing while the Jedi were busy being oblivious, Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord (2025) is your answer. This series dives deep into the underworld as Darth Maul attempts to build his Crimson Dawn empire from the ground up. It’s set in the dark, grimy corners of the Star Wars universe, away from the shiny halls of the Senate. We see a man fueled entirely by spite and robotic legs as he outmaneuvers syndicates and keeps a very close, yellow-eyed watch on his brother Savage Opress. THE PROS The fight choreography is a total win; it’s fast, brutal, and captures that high-octane double-bladed lightsaber style that made everyone lose their minds in 1999. The show is the business when it comes to the "Scum and Villainy" aspect of the lore, giving us a sincere look at the Hutt cartels and the Pykes without any Jedi coming in to spoil the fun. Maul himself is a genuine belter of a protagonist—he’s witty-ly cruel and calculated, showing a side of the character that isn't just "angry monster." It’s an authentic look at the criminal underworld that feels way more grounded than the usual space wizard fare. THE CONS It misses the 8/10 mark because the pacing can occasionally hit a Languid Burn that feels like we’re just waiting for the next lightsaber ignition. Some of the original side characters feel a bit wet and disposable, serving more as punching bags for Maul than actual people you’d care about. It’s also a bit of a head-scratcher why they chose to keep some of the plot points so vague; it can feel like a "side story" that doesn't impact the 900+ archive as much as you’d hope. It’s total garbage that the ending feels a bit rushed, like they were desperate to set up a second season rather than finishing the tale at hand. THE VERDICT A 7/10. It is a sincere and gritty addition to the vault that every Star Wars fan should check out for the action alone. It isn’t an 8 or 9/10 because it doesn’t quite reach that "epic" level of storytelling that changes the galaxy, but as a character study of a broken man, it’s a total win. It’s 100% authentic to Maul’s dark nature and proves that sometimes, the villains are just more interesting to watch. If you want to see a guy try to win through sheer force of will and hatred, this is the business. INSOMNIAC TRIVIA • Robotic Rhythm: The sound designers witty-ly used the sound of a real-life industrial lathe to create the subtle "whirring" noise of Maul’s mechanical legs during the quieter moments. It’s a sincere touch that reminds you he’s more machine than man now, even if he still flips like a gymnast.• The "Z-Word" Connection: The show witty-ly references the "Z-word" (Zabrak) culture in a way that hasn't been seen since the Clone Wars. They explored the rituals of Dathomir with a 100% authentic vibe, making the Nightbrothers seem more like a cult and less like a generic warrior race.• Voice of the Lord: The voice actor spent three days shouting at a wall to get the "gravelly, throat-shredded" quality needed for Maul’s more intense monologues. It was a sincere show of dedication that paid off, making every line feel like it was spat out with genuine venom. THE VIBE Like a red neon sign in a rainy alleyway, the hum of a dangerous power cell, and the feeling that someone is standing right behind you with a grudge. It’s dark, sharp, and intense. It makes you want to practice your menacing stare, buy a very long stick, and realize that revenge is a dish best served with a double-ended laser sword.
