    ⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 8/10 THE SUMMARY A fleet of school buses returns to the wealthy town of West Ham, Connecticut, after a canceled field trip, but the students find the place completely deserted. Their parents, siblings, and every other living soul have vanished, and a dense, impenetrable forest now surrounds the town. Cut off from the rest of the world with no internet or phone signal to the outside, the teenagers have to build their own civilization from scratch. What starts as a wild, "no-rules" party quickly turns into a desperate struggle for survival as they deal with food shortages, internal power struggles, and a dark mystery about where they actually are. THE PROS This is a great series because it takes the "Lord of the Flies" concept and updates it for the social media generation in a way that feels honest. It hits an 8 because the political drama is surprisingly smart; watching the kids argue over socialism versus capitalism while their food supplies dwindle is a total highlight. Kathryn Newton is amazing as Allie, showing a pained transformation from a shy younger sister into a hardened leader who has to make life-or-death calls. The show handles sensitive topics like domestic abuse and disability with a sincere touch, particularly through the relationship between Sam and Grizz, which is a fair shout for the heart of the whole show. It’s a grounded, suspenseful ride that keeps you guessing until the very last frame. THE CONS It stays at an 8 because the "teen drama" elements—like the constant relationship merry-go-round—can feel like a bit of a slog when you’re more interested in the sci-fi mystery. It misses a higher mark because some of the logic is an honest head-scratcher; the kids seem remarkably calm about never seeing their families again after just a few weeks. The pacing slows down in the middle as it focuses on internal town bureaucracy, which might bore viewers looking for more "survival" action. The biggest frustration is the ending—it finishes on a massive cliffhanger, and since Netflix canceled it due to the pandemic, we’re left with a pained lack of closure that will likely never be resolved. THE VERDICT 8/10. A smart, gripping, and modern take on a classic survival story. It’s amazing for anyone who likes their teen dramas with a side of political philosophy and a heavy dose of mystery. INSOMNIAC TRIVIA • Sean Berdy, who plays Sam, is actually deaf in real life, and the show’s writers worked closely with him to ensure the American Sign Language (ASL) used between the characters was honest and accurate. • The "Guard" that Allie forms to keep order is made up of former high school jocks, which was a deliberate choice to show how easily a "democracy" can slide into a military-style dictatorship when people are scared. • In an early episode, you can see the students performing the play *Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead*, which is a subtle nod to the show's theme of secondary characters being forced into the role of protagonists in a story they don't understand. THE VIBE Like a summer break that won't end. It smells of stale beer, pine needles, and the metallic tang of a cold jail cell.
